This year was my first at the PDX Code Camp, but it will not be my last! What a fun time!
I left home (Renton, WA) at about 2:30 Friday afternoon, thinking I would beat the traffic! NOT! There were TWO multicar accidents northbout on I5 near Fort Lewis. I was southbound but the “I gotta see the carnage” slowdowns made it so the normal 45 minutes to south Tacoma took over 90 minutes. However the rest of the trip was smooth sailing!
I got to my hotel about 6:15, checked in, changed clothes and headed for the Speakers and Sponsors Reception. This event was held at the Highball Distillery where they make Elemental Vodka. I can’t describe how good the Vodka was!
I had the good luck to run into my friend David Starr from Boise there. He told me about his trip over on his motorcycle and how he had sent a tweet from his I-phone at 100 mph. While chatting with David, we started talking to industry giant and all-around nice guy Ward Cunningham. He was talking about his presentation on Saturday that David and I were both going to miss because we were going to be presenting in the same time slot. I was so interested in what Ward was talking about that when I got back to my hotel, I found a video online of it. You can check it out on rod-claar.net.
The conference itself was a great success. I don’t know how many people actually showed up but they had over 650 registrants. The venue this year was Reed College in SE Portland. What a neat place! There were lots of prizes, 60 sessions, free lunch and a great time talking and sharing with other geeks!
